I did a full breakdown of MERV ratings in the What Is A MERV Rating blog post. The chart below also shows the difference between MERV ratings and HEPA ratings.
What is important to know is that MERV and HEPA are very different things. As it relates to Coronavirus, filters that fall into MERV ratings system would not fully protect you from coronavirus. What you would need is a HEPA filter to protect yourself from coronavirus. HEPA filters are what are commercially used in hospitals and other indoor places that need to keep the air quality very high.
So, you want to keep Coronavirus out of your air at home? You will want to search for a HEPA filter.
I also reviewed the best of the HEPA filters and have given you my suggestions.
