AirThreads AC Filter Review

The AirThreads filter really surprised me with the quality of product that arrived.

Best Machine Washable AC Filter

AirThreads is the best machine washable AC filter that we tested. There was a great unboxing experience. It comes with a magnetic washing reminder for the refrigerator!

What’s Included:

This filter had a great unboxing experience. It comes with a magnetic washing reminder for the refrigerator! It was very easy to put together and the packaging looked great. We didn’t rank these based on the best unboxing experience, but this one would have one that contest.

We also have a few other images below from when we opened the packaging.

Unboxing and Assembly:

Drawbacks:

The only downside to this filter was that it was the least durable of all the filters we tested. This one only lasts for about 36 washes (from the manufacturer’s website), which if you think about it is still 3 years of useful life if you wash your filter every month. I also question if the flimsy plastic frame will last the entire lifetime of the fabric material! Perhaps that is why the manufacturer advertises both the plastic frame and the fabric filter sold separately on their site. I anticipate if I stick with this filter for the long haul I will be periodically replacing the frame. Maybe I should just buy a few now just in case so I am not using my AC without a filter until the new one arrives!

Aqua-Flow AC Filter Review

While the Aqua-Flow had the lowest MERV rating of any of the filters we tested, it would still do a good job cleaning the air in your home and that MERV 6 rating is not bad by any means. For more information on MERV ratings, you can check out our post on MERV Ratings here!

Most Sizing Options

Aqua-Flow has the most size options of any of the washable air filters we researched. They offer their product in a "roll' that you can cut to fit any size home air filter. We thought that was pretty cool and worth noting.

Drawbacks:

  1. Who Is This Company? One thing that worried me about this product was the lack of a website and my inability to be able to find any information on the company. Also, judging by the other products they sell on amazon it looks like they specialize in fish tanks and fish tank filters.
  2. No Warranty: There was also no mention of any king of warranty. Even if there was, I have no idea where to contact this company if you had an issue and needed it replaced.
  3. How Long Does It Last? I could not find any information online (or their non-existent website) that offer any explanation on how long this would last or how many filters this washable filter replaces. The good news is that this filter was the least expensive on the list so wort-case-scenario you buy a full roll and cut off a new one when it falls apart.

Carter AC Filter Review

We scoured the internet for the best washable air filters on the market and we were able to narrow it down to our top 4. We identified the most important features to consider when purchasing a washable AC filter and distilled that down into an easy to understand chart. Below the chart, you will find detailed reviews with images of each that include unboxing, assembly, and install. After the reviews you have: a search box where you can search our site for the perfect air filter, a side length selector if you have measured your furnace, our brands we offer, and all dimensions we offer. Enjoy!

Best Electrostatic Washable Home AC Filter

The Carter washable home air filter seemed incredibly sturdy. The metal frame stood out when compared to the other flimsy plastic frames of the competitors. I certainly believe this will in fact last a lifetime like the warranty suggests as well as providing great air quality to my family and pets.

Unboxing and Assembly:

Electrostatic Air Filters:

It is also worth noting that there were a few other options for electrostatic air filters on amazon. We chose this one due to the reviews and price, but here are a few other options for you if you are interested in electrostatic AC Filters.

Drawbacks:

  1. Is It Easy To Clean?: While this filter is incredibly sturdy, is not as easy to clean as some of the others. You cannot simply throw this one into the laundry or hose it down. The electrostatic material means you need to use a vacuum cleaner to suck the particles out of the metal material. It is a little bit time consuming and I wonder about how clean I am actually getting it.

K&N AC Filter Review

Did we save the best for last? It is quite possible!

Highest MERV Rating

Aqua-Flow has the most size options of any of the washable air filters we researched. They offer their product in a "roll' that you can cut to fit any size home air filter. We thought that was pretty cool and worth noting.

The K&N Washable home air filter had the highest MERV rating of all the Washable Home Air Filters we tested. If you are shopping for a washable AC Filter and air quality is your biggest concern, you should go with the MERV 11 rated K&N Filter.

Drawbacks:

  1. K&N Cleaning Spray: The K&N AC filter requires that you purchase a special solvent to help clean the filter and remove the dirt and dust from the filter. While I understand the idea of using a cleaning agent to help maintain my unit, it is just another thing that I have to purchase to keep my house in order. One of the reasons why I am so excited about washable AC Filters is that I don’t have to waste time running out to the store and buy a new filter when it needs to be replaced. This is just another things that I have to remember now!
  2. The Lifetime Warranty: I really love that the company offers a lifetime warranty, giving me the peace of mind that I am looking for. However, The fact that this filter is made from what looks to be some sort of cloth material leads me to believe that this item was not designed to last a lifetime. The last thing I want to do is call the company two or three years from now and argue with the company over the phone about a lifetime guarantee, prove that I purchased the item, get sent a replacement, blah blah blah… The Carter filter seems to be one that would last significantly longer than this one, but I will have to find out over time!

Our Final Rankings

What is our opinion for the Best Washable Home AC Filters on the market?

Drumroll Please…

  1. Airthreads
  2. Carter
  3. K&N
  4. Aqua-Flow

And there you have it! The top 4 washable AC filters on the market ranked for your shopping convenience.

Will MERV 13 stop coronavirus?

I did a full breakdown of MERV ratings in the What Is A MERV Rating blog post. The chart below also shows the difference between MERV ratings and HEPA ratings.

What is important to know is that MERV and HEPA are very different things. As it relates to Coronavirus, filters that fall into MERV ratings system would not fully protect you from coronavirus. What you would need is a HEPA filter to protect yourself from coronavirus. HEPA filters are what are commercially used in hospitals and other indoor places that need to keep the air quality very high.

So, you want to keep Coronavirus out of your air at home? You will want to search for a HEPA filter

I also reviewed the best of the  HEPA filters and have given you my suggestions.

Are Dyson HEPA Filters Washable?

So you decided to spring for a Dyson HEPA Vacuum cleaner and now need to replace the filter. You have already researched HEPA filters, their benefits, and maybe have already purchased a Washable AC Filter for your home HVAC unit. Great Job! You are well on your way to better air quality in your home…

Now lets figure out the best way to make sure your investment is taken care of.

On your Dyson Vacuum with a HEPA filter, you will have two main filters. It is important to distinguish between these two because one is washable and one is not.

Pre-Filter vs HEPA Filter

Now that you know the difference between the HEPA filter and the Pre Filter, let’s review the different options available to you to replace those filters.

OEM vs Other Brand Vacuum Filters

OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer. You purchased a Dyson vacuum, which is one of the most popular brands in the market. So naturally there will be lots of sales for replacement filters. OEM Filters tend to be on the expensive side, so there is room for other smaller companies to manufacture parts at a slightly lower price and capture some of those sales, which is great news for you if you are on a budget. The downside is that you don’t have a guarantee that those items will fit perfectly into your Dyson cleaner, but the ones I looked at didn’t seem to have any issues.

What is a MERV Rating?

A MERV rating is something that helps comparing the performance of different home air filters. This number tells you how well the filter is able to remove particles from the air. The test to generate these numbers was developed by American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).

MERV Rating Chart

Below you will find the MERV rating chart. I fond the EPA website chart difficult to understand, so I made it easier for you.

MERV Rating3.0 - 10.0 Microns1.0 - 3.0 Microns0.3 - 1.0 MicronsIs It HEPA?
1-4less than 20%--No
620% - 49.9%--No
850% - 84.9%--No
1085% +50% - 64.9%-No
1290% +80% - 89.9%-No
14-90% +75% - 84%No
16--75% +No
17+ (Not technically MERV tested)---Yes

What MERV rating is HEPA?

Technically, MERV filters are less than the minimum for HEPA. HEPA filters are high efficiency particulate air filters that remove 99.97% of all particles .3 nanometers in size. MERV Filters use different tests than the HEPA filters, but typically MERV filters will not be HEPA filters as shown in the chart above.

You can shop our selection of trusted HEPA filters here.

What is a good MERV Rating?

The higher the MERC rating, the more (and also smaller) particles the filter removes from the air. The higher the MERV Rating, the cleaner your air will be.

The downside of this is that your HVAC system will need to work harder as you increase your MERV Rating. In order for your HVAC to cool your home, it will need to exert more energy to do that, resulting in an increased energy bill.

Our current recommendation is to use a filter with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) of 13, but a MERV 14 (or better) filter Is preferred. Of course, the ultimate choice needs to take the capabilities of the HVAC systems into consideration. Generally, increasing filter efficiency leads to increased pressure drop which can lead to reduced air flow through the HVAC system, more energy use for the fan to compensate for the increased resistance, or both. If a MERV 13 filter cannot be accommodated in the system, then use the highest MERV rating you can.

ASHRAE

Is MERV 13 too High?

According to ASHRAE (The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers) recommends MERV 13 for residential HVAC units and higher if possible. However, if you are looking reduce your energy bill, you could consider using a lower MERV rated filter.

Will a MERV 13 hurt my furnace?

MERV 13 filters should not hurt your furnace, however they will require your HVAC unit to work harder as there is less air flow when compared to lower rated filters. This will require your HVAC unit to work harder and this could cause excessive wear and tear on your unit.

Is MERV 8 good enough?

ASHRAE recommends MERV 13 for residential HVAC units and higher if possible, but many units will be fine with lower MERV ratings if you are not terribly concerned with the air quality. MERV 8 filters will remove a majority of the tiny particles that are floating around in the air. It will not remove the smallest particles like the highest rated filters, but will still do a good job.

What MERV rating is best for Covid-19?

To better protect yourself from COVID in your home, use MERV 13 filters or higher according to ASHRAE. This will help to filter out unwanted particles in the air.

ASHRAE is recommending that MERV 13 filters be used where possible, with MERV-A 13-A or MERV 14 preferred. This is pushing the use of higher efficiency filters in many buildings. For locations that can’t upgrade the HVAC filter or increase outdoor air during winter, in-room units are recommended to add cleaning capability. These units should include high MERV or better filters to remove most of these virus-laden particles.

ASHRAE

Do HEPA air purifiers work for coronavirus?

HEPA air filters are a classification of air filters that are “High Efficiency” meaning they collect viruses that are very small, including the Coronavirus. However, the HVAC unit needs to be turned on in order for the filter to collect the virus. Also, the filter would not prevent the virus from being transmitted before the air gets moved through the filter.

Example: You come home from work after being exposed to the virus and you hug your kids as you walk through the door. This would not prevent you from transmitting the virus as the filter was not able to process the air in time.

Are HEPA filters medical grade?

HEPA filters are considered medical grade and are used in many medical and office spaces. The reason is that they are able to remove 99.97% of all particles as small as .3 Microns. In a separate article titled “Which is the best HEPA Filter” I wrote and extensive article on the various HEPA Filter air purifiers. There is one that is also marked as the best HEPA filter for medical offices

MERV Rating3.0 - 10.0 Microns1.0 - 3.0 Microns0.3 - 1.0 Microns.3 MicronsIs It HEPA?
1-4less than 20%---No
620% - 49.9%---No

1290% +80% - 89.9%--No
14-90% +75% - 84%-No
16--75% +-No
HEPA---99.97%Yes

As seen in the chart above, if you are looking for a medical grade filter, you will need a HEPA filter. Be careful, HEPA filters are not designed to be used in your standard home HVAC unit.

Which HEPA filter is best?

HEPA filters have become a largely discussed during the COVID-19 Pandemic. As a matter of fact, the google trends screenshot below shows the spike at the beginning of the pandemic.

There is a lot of confusion on what a HEPA filter is, and how regular people like you and I can use them in our home. Today I want to help you understand how HEPA filters can help protect you and your family from airborne pathogens and the best HEPA filters for home use.

Oh, I almost forgot… HEPA is different than MERV. Confused? Now worries. I have a post answering the question “What is a MERV rating?”

HEPA on Google Trends
Wow, HEPA was searched A LOT after the start of the COVID Pandemic!

Before we go into the details of all of the top HEPA filters on amazon below, I want to make an important a couple of important disclaimers.

  1. Some of the filters below claim to be washable, but still require filters to be changed out and permanently discarded. The reason they can make that claim is that most of these units have at least two separate filters and at least one of them is washable, but the HEPA Filter in the unit is not washable. My main focus when creating this site was to build awareness on how important it is to use Washable AC Filters to reduce the amount of home air filters that make it to the garbage and landfills. Most HEPA filters are not washable the way that my favorite Washable AC Filters are. However, it is also important to help regular people get the best air quality in their home with making the smallest impact to what goes into landfills.
  2. The HEPA filters reviewed below are portable units for a single room or mutiple rooms, depending on the layout of your home. HEPA filters are considered ‘medical grade’ and are generally not sold in sizes that fit your home AC unit filter sizes. The reason is that the filter would put too much strain on your residential system and could cause damage to your unit without some significant modifications.

What To Look For In A Home HEPA Filter

We looked at all of the options on amazon and found a few cool features on a number of the units on amazon. We broke our list down by the following features so you can make an informed decision.

  1. UV-C Light
  2. Low Cost Filter Replacements
  3. Air Quality Indicator
  4. True HEPA Filter
  5. Carbon Filter
  6. Remote Control
  7. Room Coverage Size
  8. Brand

UV-C LIght: There is a debate weather or not having UV-C light is a good thing when choosing a home HEPA filter. There is no denying that UVC light kills harmful germs and bacteria in the air. In the same way that UVC Light is harmful to germs and viruses, it can also be harmful to your body when exposed to the light. There is also the notion that UVC light can cause ozone, which when breathed in can cause issues as well, but I struggled to find a definitive answer one way or another. If you don’t want UV-C light, you will see a number of units that advertise “Ozone Free” on their products. We have reviewed a few with and without UVC light so you can choose one way or another depending on your comfort level.

Low Cost Filter Replacements: Inevitably you will need to replace your HEPA filter, but in many cases this is not something that people take into consideration when selecting their unit.  In each unit I looked at, I also looked up and linked to the replacement filters (and also their price history on amazon) I gave them a rating range of $, $ and $ (with $ being the least expensive and $ being the most expensive).

Air Quality Indicator: AQ indicators, or Air Quality Indicators, are a nice feature to have as well. Some will even turn on and off automatically based on the AQ readings found on the device.

True HEPA Filter: The term “True HEP Filter” is really just a marketing term that doesn’t really mean anything. However, many of the products listed show the actual HEPA ratings.

Carbon Filter: There are many units that contain two, three, or even four separate filters in the unit. Many times there is a carbon filter included in that. The carbon filter helps to remove even more impurities in the air that the HEPA filter may miss.

Remote Control: Am I the only lazy one here? I think not, but having a remove control or app is just a nice-to-have!

Room Coverage Size: Most will also advertise the size of room (in square feet) that the product can cycle through the air over a given period of time (usually one hour). We have listed these sizes in our comparison as well. One thing we noticed is that the larger units can filter more air at a faster rate. These units also tend to be more expensive, so keep that in mind when you are looking at these units.

Brands: I put brands as something to consider when making your selection. The reason is that because this industry has boomed since the pandemic, there are a number of brands that are selling HEPA air purifiers on amazon that you may have never heard of. Those brands may just be there to make a quick buck and be selling an inferior product without having gone through the proper testing that is required for a safe product. I am not saying that those practices are going on, but going with a brand you have heard of will help ease those concerns.

BlueDri BD-AS-550-BL Review

The BlueDri BD-AS-550-BL is a beast. It’s high powered fan can cycle through the air in large rooms very quickly. Sure, it is quite loud… but when noise is not a problem for you, this is the best bang for your buck. In a commercial setting, this one wins hands down.

Best HEPA Filter For School Classrooms

Back to school is here and the pandemic is still in effect. This filter would be great to have in classrooms as we go back to school and people are still worries about the transmission of airborne illness. Imagine being able to cycle through 100% of the air in a classroom between room changes or breaks! This HEPA filter would be a perfect air purifier for a classroom.

Drawbacks:

  1. Noise: The main drawback for this unit is that it is quite loud. If you are using this for home renovations, construction sites, or any other application where noise levels are not an issue, this one works great.
  2. Looks: This unit is also not the most attractive either, but it is quite rugged. It is designed to be used for construction sites to be picked up, put down, dropped, moved and more. If you want something that is inconspicuous for your home and matches your décor, you may want to move further down the list.

BlueDri BD-AS-550-BL Filter Replacements

Before Purchasing your HEPA unit, make sure you check the pricing of the replacement filters. These are not as expensive as some of the medical grad filters, but not as inexpensive as the smaller residential filters either. The manufacturer recommends you change these as needed, but if you give them a quick cleaning with a vacuum or shop-vac you can extend the life of these filters.

There are 3 filters you may need to use this unit. They are listed below.

IQAir HealthPro Plus Review

IQAir HealthPro Plus is the top of the line for HEPA air purifiers. The medical grade unit is perfect for medical offices or professional offices. The large unit quickly cycles the air of very large rooms or other large indoor spaces. It is also great for your home if you have really large ceilings and open indoor areas.

Best HEPA Filter For Medical Offices

This filter would be great to have in classrooms as we go back to school and people are still worries about the transmission of airborne illness. Imagine being able to cycle through 100% of the air in a classroom between room changes or breaks! This HEPA filter would be a perfect air purifier for a classroom.

Drawbacks:

  1. Expense: The main drawback for this unit is that it is quite expensive, and not just the unit itself. The replacement filters are very expensive as well, the reason is that this is a medical grade filter used in medical professional settings.
  2. Knock-offs: After reading most of the reviews, it looks like the main concern people have is that they are sometimes being sent an inauthentic product. To avoid this, be sure to purchase directly from the “IQAir” Seller on amazon.

IQAir Genuine Filter Replacements

Before Purchasing your HEPA unit, make sure you check the pricing of the replacement filters. These are quite expensive as medical grade filters. There are 3 filters you may need to use this unit. They are listed below.

TREDY HEPA Air Purifier Review

The TREDY HEPA Air Purifier is a great option for individual rooms or for a small portion of your home. The Air Quality indicator is also an interesting feature that allows the unit to turn on and off depending on the air quality that it detects. The compact form factor is also a plus to put it in an office, bedroom, kitchen or living room in an inconspicuous location.

Drawbacks:

  1. Brand Name: I have never heard of this brand, so it is hard to tell if this item will last in the long run, but based on the specifications it looks to be a good bang for your buck and a great option for someone seeking to improve the air quality in your home.
  2. Single Replaceable Filter (Maybe): The single filter may turn out to be more convenient, but in the other models reviewed above each of the “Stages” are able to be replaced individually, but the compact form factor of this unit doesn’t allow enough room for this. That being said, it may be more convenient that there is only one filter and less room for user error.   🙂

GermGuardian HEPA Air Purifier Filter Replacements

These are the least expensive filters of all the ones we looked at. The compact unit only allows enough space to hold a single filter, so all four “Stages” that you have seen in the previous models are combined into one filter that should last for about 6 months. The factory also admits to get the filter to last that long, you will need to vacuum the filter about once per week to maintain it.

Are Washable Air Filters Safe?
